Construction professionals call for increased awareness of BIM to unlock overseas sales for UK

UK professionals are calling for increased awareness of Building Information Modelling (BIM) methods to help the UK compete on the European and global stage. Over 70% of the construction industry professionals surveyed by BSI, the business standards company, believe that BIM will put UK industry on a better footing to compete internationally and will improve the UK construction industry overall.

£14 million lost to goods hijacking on British roads in three months

Companies lost an estimated £14 million as a result of cargo theft on UK roads between April and June, according to new research from BSI and the National Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service (NaVCIS). This marks an increase of £1m from the previous quarter, despite a fall in the overall number of incidents from 454 in Q1 to 386.

Research conducted by BSI, the business improvement company has revealed that one in six European organizations are unprepared for a data breach. The research carried out by the Cybersecurity and Information Resilience division of BSI for Cybersecurity Awareness month also highlighted that 39 per cent of organizations have experienced a data breach in the last 12 months.

BSI Appoints John Hirst CBE

The British Standards Institution today announced that John Hirst CBE will be appointed as a Non-Executive Director of BSI with effect from 15 October 2018. From 1 January 2019, John will take over from BSI’s current Chairman, Sir David Brown, who will complete his term on 31 December 2018. John will become a member of the Audit and Social Responsibility Committees on appointment.

Inaugural meeting of the Commonwealth Standards Network

The inaugural meeting of the Commonwealth Standards Network (CSN) was held on 26 September 2018 in Genève, Switzerland. The CSN is a collaborative network open to all Commonwealth countries and regional Commonwealth associations. It has been launched to tackle non-tariff barriers and promote strong trade amongst all Commonwealth states through the participation, adoption and implementation of international standards.

International standard for grades of wrought tool steels revised

BSI, the business standards company, has revised its standard for cold formed welded steel. BS EN ISO 4957:2018 Tool steels replaces the previous version of this standard published in 1999. The revised standard will be of particular interest to producers of wrought tool steels; welding manufacturers; structural steel manufacturers; and all types of hot-rolled, forged, cold-drawn or cold-rolled products.

BSI signs deal with Japanese Standards Associations

BSI, the UK National Standards Body appointed by the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, has signed an agreement with the Japanese Standards Association (JSA) today. This Memorandum of Understanding will increase collaboration between BSI and Japan, to further economic ties between the two nations. The agreement builds on extensive engagement between BSI and Japan, complementing agreements signed between BSI and the Japanese Industrial Standards Committee in December 2004 and re-signed in March 2017.

BSI, the business standards company, has published a report calling for the creation of best practice guidance to grow the nascent virtual and augmented reality sectors. The UK is a strong player in the global markets for gaming, video content creation and broadcast – as well as the supporting R&D, education/training, and design and innovation sectors. BSI, the business standards company, has published the first global standard for occupational health and safety management, ISO 45001 Occupational health and safety management – requirements with guidance for use. ISO 45001 specifies requirements for creating an occupational health and safety (OH&S) management system, with interpretation guidance to enable an organization to improve OH&S performance in the workplace. New guide to improve consumer product safety recalls

The Government’s new Office for Product Safety and Standards has teamed up with BSI, the UK’s National Standards Body, to launch the first Government-backed Code of Practice (PAS 7100) for product safety recall in the UK. The Code of Practice includes details on how a business can monitor the safety of products and plan for a recall, and how Market Surveillance Authorities such as local authority Trading Standards can support businesses in their monitoring of incidents and their implementation of corrective action.
