BSI invites comments on standard for managing projects

PRESS RELEASE

15 December 2009

BS 6079-1, the British Standard on project management, is being revised to incorporate current technology, techniques and developments in the field of project management. BSI is calling for comments on the draft version, available to view hereuntil 28 February 2010.

BS 6079-1 Project management - Part 1: Principles and guidelines for the management of projects identifies organizational needs as the key driver in project management, and encourages the establishment of specialist cross-functional teams in pursuit of stated business objectives. The current draft standard includes a fully revised set of accountabilities and process models to assist with the direction and management of a project. It also draws attention to the management challenges encountered in different environments and provides advice on tailoring approaches for each context.

This standard provides guidance for those new to project management and more experienced professionals, specifically; project managers in organizations of any size or sector; project sponsors responsible for achieving organizational objectives; project managers responsible for delivering project outputs; team managers and members responsible for delivering the specialist outputs of a project; project support staff and technicians; educators and trainers who need to understand the context in which project management is used.

Mike Low, Director, Standards, BSI, said: “This standard has broad relevance to projects across industry and the public sector and has been used enthusiastically by those involved in project management. It is now being updated to reflect the very latest developments in project management techniques and technology. I strongly urge all professionals involved in project management to review and comment on the draft standard. Once published the new version should prove a very useful guidance document which can be tailored to suit the needs of the individual organization.”
