Closed-circuit television (CCTV) is often used for surveillance in public areas, particularly where there is an increased need for security (such as banks and airports). There are over 4.25 million CCTV cameras installed in the UK; the increasing use of CCTV in public places has provoked debate over security versus privacy.
CCTV schemes that process data about a known person are obliged to conform to certain legislation, most importantly the Data Protection Act, 1998 (DPA), the Human Rights Act, 1998 (HRA) and the Freedom of Information Act. BSI’s code of practice is designed to supplement that legislation. It gives recommendations for the operation and management of CCTV and assists owners of CCTV schemes to follow best practices in obtaining reliable information that may be used as evidence.
This British Standard code of practice gives recommendations for the operation and management of closed circuit television (CCTV) within a controlled environment, where data that may be offered as evidence is received, stored, reviewed or analyzed.
