If a document is to be admissible in court, its authenticity must be beyond question. Organizations that process large volumes of data therefore need to maximise the reliability of the electronic information they manage, whilst minimising the risk of its long-term storage.
BSI has previously produced guidance in this area in the form of a Code of Practice (BIP 0008, available in 3 parts) and has now published a British Standard (BS 10008 Evidential weight and legal admissibility of electronic information), which more formally specifies the requirements for the implementation and operation of electronic document management systems.
Legal admissibility concerns whether or not a piece of evidence would be accepted by a court of law. To ensure the admissibility, information needs to be managed by a secure system throughout its lifetime (which can be for many years). Where doubt can be placed on the information, the evidential weight may well be reduced, potentially harming the legal case.
