CHESSS - CEN Horizontal Services Standardization Strategy
The European Committee for Standardization (CEN) has been invited to develop a standardization work programme that will build on its existing strategy for service standardization and further support the internal market in services. The overall objective is to establish the feasibility of and produce proposals for an ongoing programme of projects that will enhance the free movement and delivery of services across national borders.

Home Office
Private standard - visual recording of evidence within the Criminal Justice System (CJS)
The Home Office needed to ensure that the recording of witnesses within the CJS would be acceptable if and when a case went to court. The variety of media technology currently available meant that independent consultation was vital.
Solution
Working with the justice and witness unit of the Home Office, BSI identified the operational requirements of media use relating to vulnerable witnesses. We consulted with industry on the technical capability to be able to do this. This resulted in the delivery of a private specification that the CJS and their relevant suppliers can now use as a benchmark for the procurement of courtroom technology. It also provides the Home Office with control over the procurement of technology throughout the Criminal Justice System.
Institute of Asset Management
PAS 55 - Specification for Asset Management
The Institute of Asset Management wanted to raise the profile of the industry by setting a common framework that organizations could work in accordance with.
Solution
BSI worked with the IAM to develop a specification for asset management which defines best practice within the utilities, transport and other sectors.
Waste Resource Action Programme (WRAP)
PAS 102 - Specification for processed glass for alternative end markets
WRAP promotes sustainable waste management. It has four programmes of work that focus on specific materials: glass, paper, plastics and wood. In order to meet the objective of increasing the use of glass within end markets WRAP needed to build consensus in how this supply chain could most effectively operate.
Solution
BSI worked with WRAP to create a process for the collection and recycling of glass, allowing consistent quality of material to be provided to industry. Ths will open up markets for the more efficient and commercially viable recycling of glass.
Ministry of Defence (MOD)
Private standard - Training Manual
The MOD needed to establish a nationally credible standard for the provision of training by internal and external parties in order to ensure consistency of quality and create an open benchmark for procurement.
Solution
BSI applied the same degree of technical rigour to the MOD's standard as we do to British Standards, giving the MOD confidence in their process. This standard now provides the MOD with consistency in quality during the procurement of training.
