Lighter-touch regulation
Standards help organisations to work more efficiently and to deliver a higher level of quality for their clients, customers and other stakeholders.
Helping you deliver
As an example, take one of the Government's key aims for the public sector, delivering a lighter-touch regulatory regime.
Ideally, this means matching or improving on current success rates, but doing so with greater efficiency and user-friendliness. Driving this kind of streamlining process is exactly the sort of thing that standards are used for day in day out, up and down the country and across the globe.
Standards can impact positively on almost every aspect of an organisation's operation. They:
- provide a cost-effective way of ensuring your compliance with regulatory requirements
- reduce duplication of work and facilitate greater co-operation within and between departments
- offer a systematic framework for reviewing and improving the efficiency of workplace systems and practices

What standards do
The idea behind the standards system is a remarkably simple one. A standard sets out the consensus view as to best practice on a given organisational, managerial or technical question. It's that simple, but then often the best ideas are.
