DERG Role Description

1. Self-declared disabled person with particular expertise in at least one of the BSI-CPI work areas:

Accessibility/Design for all

International standards
Healthcare
Manufacturing

2. Computer-literate with own computer and relevant applications (e.g. email, Word, etc.) and preferably broadband. Own telephone.

3. Participates actively in the Group, as one or both of the following:

a) Background expert who actively responds by email and/or phone to requests from the DERG coordinator (currently Michelle Valentine, who is CPI Coordinator for the CPI Accessibility/Design for All group, which includes DERG) and CPI Unit for prompt input and comments on accessibility aspects of British Standards;
b) CPI Representative on Technical Committee work.

4. Role duration: Initial ‘probationary’ period of 6 months, followed by informal review; full review after further 18 months.

5. Principal mode of contact: email and 'phone.

6. Nature of work: issues related to specific standards, consultations or topic-related questions.

7. DERG members may become actively involved in standards work by formally applying to become CPI Reps. As with all other applicants, this process requires a formal interview and success is not automatically guaranteed.

8. DERG members must be willing to access BSI public web pages, the BSI e-Committees system and any other relevant systems, so that they can view Reps’ reports of meetings and conferences, Guidance, Useful Links, etc. (They will receive automatic notifications of documents uploaded to that website.) Reasonable adjustments will be made for anyone who, for reasons of disability, has difficulty accessing e-Committees.

9. DERG members who become CPI Reps are eligible to claim expenses for attending BSI and CPIN meetings out of the BIS fund for that purpose. Those working for either the government or academia are required to provide written confirmation from their employer that CPIN work is undertaken as a private individual.

10. BSI training is available to all DERG members.

11. Helpdesks are provided for GlobalExpense and BSI e-Committees. One-to-one training in these systems can also be arranged with Asmita Vara, Administrator for CPIN.

12. DERG members will respect the basic tenets of BSI with regard to, e.g. consensus and confidentiality and must declare any personal interest that could compromise the values of the DERG group or BSI.

13. DERG members will not use DERG as a platform for issues outside of those relating directly to BSI and British Standards – members should be clear that the CPI Network is not a campaigning or pressure group.

14. When expressing their views, DERG members will make it clear whether these are as a disabled expert on behalf of their organization, or as an individual.

15. DERG members will be automatically invited to two CPI Network all-members’ meetings.
