Product testing and marking explained

Whether there is a legal requirement or not, there is an important competitive advantage to be gained from differentiating a company’s products from those of its competitors through a certification mark, such as:

  • inspiring customer trust
  • demonstrating a commitment to quality through voluntary compliance
  • independent third party verification.

Independent product testing

In the early stages of a standard’s implementation, there are times when the input of a third party may be required. For example, a product may have to be tested for fire resistance or durability, requiring specialized knowledge and equipment.

Although such tests can often be carried out in-house and verified by a third party, many small businesses choose to outsource this test work. In some cases, the same third-party organisation is able to perform the initial testing and then certify compliance.

Test services are provided by a range of organizations, from specialists in particular sectors and markets (in which case a trade association may be able to offer advice), to those covering a variety of sectors.

The certification process

When an application for certification is made, representatives from the certification body visit the business to examine how the standard is being used. The time taken and the cost involved depend on such factors as the specific standards being implemented and the number of employees the business has.

Following this inspection, the certifying body either issues a compliance certificate or provides guidance about where things need to be improved so that compliance can be achieved. In the latter case, another visit is then arranged to determine whether the necessary criteria have been met. Once issued, compliance certificates need to be renewed periodically.
