Professional Services – About PASs

Description of a PAS

Standards Institution’s fast-track standards development process is available to all organizations wishing to create credible private or public standards.  The standards are driven by the needs of the sponsoring organization or industry, while still being controlled by BSI guidelines to ensure credibility.

The BSI Publicly Available Specification (PAS) is a consultative document that is based on the British Standard model, but with direct sponsorship and participation from individual organizations and stakeholders. Any company, government department, association, NGO or academic institution who wish to document standardized best practice on a specific subject, both for the benefit of their industry and to help promote their expertise, can commission a PAS, subject to the BSI acceptance process.

Typically, the process takes between six to nine months, and allows the sponsor a greater degree of control and flexibility over its development. The PAS can be written to enable the creation of test methods, management systems and certification schemes.

After two years the PAS is reviewed and a decision made with the sponsor as to whether or not it should be taken forward to become a formal British Standard.
