Introducing BSI’s Data Protection Online tool

BSI’s Data Protection Online, designed to help organizations with the effective management of personal information, was launched at The Gladstone Library, One Whitehall Place on Wednesday 16 September 2009.  This followed the launch just three months earlier in June 2009 of BS 10012 Data Protection - the first standard to specify the requirements for a personal information management system (PIMS).

The audience for the launch of BSI Data Protection Online heard about three different perspectives on data protection compliance:

  • “Learning to live with BS 10012” - Jan Booth, Head of Information Governance & Compliance, King’s College London
  • “Managing the DP challenge internationally” - Kevin Broadfoot,
Commercial, Legal & Regulatory Manager, COLT Telecom Group Limited
  • “People Matter” - Dr Chris Pounder, Amberhawk

BSI Data Protection Online offers guidance and self-assessment in support of the data protection standard BS 10012.  The online tool enables an organization to systematically work through its PIMS, testing strengths and identifying areas for improvement. This process develops confidence in procedures and practices and will ultimately help deliver a better service to customers.

The resource also features a regularly-updated reference library of guidance developed from BSI’s previous hardcopy subscription publication “Data Protection Update Guide” (BIP 0012:2007).  The online reference library includes case studies and topical commentaries written by data protection experts which will be updated monthly.
