From DTI to DIUS

DIUS_logoBERR_logoThe Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) was disbanded on 28 June 2007 with the announcement of the creation of the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) and the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS) who is BSI British Standards main contact department.

Functions from the DTI are now split between the two new departments as follows:

Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS)
This new Department brings together functions of the Office of Science and Innovation from the former DTI with further and higher education and skills, previously part of the Department for Education and Skills. DIUS, headed by John Denham MP, aims to build a dynamic, knowledge-based economy and to lead the Government's work to ensure Britain is one of the best places in the world for science, research and innovation and that the UK has the skilled workforce it needs to compete in the global economy. DIUS will work closely with the new Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) and Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) as well as other key Departments – including Communities and Local Government and Department for Culture Media and Sport (DCMS) to ensure the wider personal, community and cultural benefits of education and science are supported.

Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR)
The Department brings together functions from the former DTI, including responsibilities for productivity, business relations, energy, competition and consumers, with the Better Regulation Executive (BRE), previously part of the Cabinet Office. BERR is headed by John Hutton, the first Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform. The Department will provide support to the new Business Council for Britain. The Council, made up of senior business leaders, will assist the Government by putting in place the right strategy to promote the long-term health of the UK economy. The Department will work closely with DIUS.
