BSI British Standards has recently won a number of international awards, including the category of ‘Advertising, Promotion and Campaigns’ at this year's International Visual Communication Association (IVCA) Clarion Awards. BSI won the award for the communications surrounding the launch of the Publicly Available Specification (PAS) 78. PAS 78 outlines good practice in commissioning websites which a accessible and usable by people with disabilities.
The award has been given to BSI for promoting higher levels of web accessibility and increasing the understanding of new guidelines to those responsible for commissioning or maintaining public-facing websites. The award ceremony took place at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) in central London in September.
CEN/CENELEC PR awards
To add to the award received last year at the first ever CEN/CENELEC PR Awards, BSI won two more this year which were presented in September at the Round Table event in Stockholm. They are for Best Website Contribution for www.raisingstandards.com, developed as part of a recent big business National Standardization Strategic Framework (NSSF) campaign, and Best Brochure for The small business guide to making standards work, also developed as part of an NSSF campaign.
There were six CEN/CENELEC award categories and BSI was the only national standards body to win more than one. Sarah Penny, Award Judge said of the brochure and wesbite, "The Jury was impressed by the achievements of BSI, especially in its aim at targeting SMEs. The brochure was highly creative and the real-life situations of how standardization affects SMEs in everyday work was extremely well balanced.”
Best scientific paper
And finally at the fifth biennial European Systems Engineering Conference in Edinburgh, also in September, BSI won the prize for ‘Best scientific paper’. The paper - The role of systems engineering in global standardization - positions BSI at the cutting edge of new ideas, and will be published in many journals and newsletters worldwide. It was written jointly by Paul McNeillis of BSI Professional Services and Jon Holt of Brass Bullet.
About the awards
The Clarion Awards were launched at the UK Parliament four years ago - and are designed to acknowledge and promote creative, effective and inspirational media which deal responsibly with important social issues. CSR, sustainable development and social inclusion are at the heart of the awards - although any major issue can be recognized as long as it is dealt with responsibly.
Awards are presented for every media platform and range from mainstream film, theatre, television and radio to all aspects of corporate and public sector communications. IVCA has a long (in excess of 60 years) history of recognizing media excellence and previous IVCA award winners include such figures as Anita Roddick, Bob Geldof, Ridley Scott, Lord Attenborough, Sir Trevor McDonald, Lord Puttnam, Bob Philis, Anna Ford, and Moira Stuart.
