British Standards Operations Director

Image: Shirley Bailey-WoodShirley Bailey-Wood is the Operations Director of British Standards, heading up the functions that are responsible for standards development and production.

This post was created to boost British Standards' ability to respond to market need, to optimise engagement with committee members and to ensure the delivery of a consistently high quality of customer-relevant standards. Shirley was previously the senior vice president of the Pharmaceuticals and Chemistry Business Unit of Thomson Scientific and Healthcare where she was responsible for operational and business development activities. Her role adds to BSI's capability to stimulate innovation and improve efficiency in current and new sectors.

Other new faces in Operations include Breda Corish, who has joined to manage the Enhanced Service Level Committee Managers. Following the departure of Jolanta Coyne, Anne Hayes who has been responsible for the National Content for many years now also manages the UK Co-ordination teams headed by John Terry, Sheila James, Ed Lee, Marion Broomes. They work closely together to manage the delivery of standards work programmes and to ensure best practice in their creation.

The Consumer Policy Unit, headed by Val Shepherd, is also now within Operations, reporting to Dan Palmer. This area actively works to more fully support consumer interests as we set priorities across the formal standards programme. Also moved into Operations are Nikki Dennis and Richard Taylor, the market development managers in risk and ICT.

Other changes in British Standards have seen Frank Post join as Strategic Marketing Director. Frank was BSI Group Marketing Director before accepting the challenge to head up the new Strategic Marketing team. This department includes staff responsible for market analysis, communications and external affairs.
