BSI British Standards education update

BSI education websiteBSI's education activities have been hotting up this year with several new services launched.

The new education web site - www.bsieducation.org - was given an award by CEN and CENELEC for the best National Standards Body website in Europe.

For the first time, a BSI website has resources for primary schools. It includes curriculum-related activities, lesson plans, and product tests for 7-11 year olds, 11-14 year olds and 14-19 year olds. The main curriculum subjects supported are design and technology, manufacturing, engineering, with many standards areas featured.

Further and higher education also has a site, including information on how standards are created, the role of the NSB, the main management systems standards and help with finding standards for course work and research.

In addition two new education guides have been launched.

A revision of the guide to TPS has been published - PP 8888-1:2005 Drawing Practice. A guide for schools and colleges to BS 8888:2004 Technical Product Specification. Plans are in place for a revision of the guide for universities.

A resource for Business Studies students on Implementing Quality Systems, and published by the Times newspapers, has been sent to all schools and colleges. This is a follow up to last year's BSI contribution to the Times 100 programme on Standardization and Quality Management. Both can be viewed on http://www.thetimes100.co.uk/case-study--standardization-quality-management--53-104-1.php.

Also recently published are the guide for undergraduates to the Structural Eurocodes (PP 1990:2004) and a revision of the compendium of standards for design and technology teachers in schools and colleges (PP 7321:2004).
