BSI British Standards has teamed up with Manchester United Football Club to promote its GetGreenGo™ sustainable challenge for schools. GetGreenGo™ is a chance for schools to apply the principles of BS 8901: Specification for a sustainable event management system with guidance for use, the BSI standard published last year. The standard provides events organizers with a framework within which to develop a system for managing the overall environmental, social and economic impact of an event. GetGreenGo™ takes BS 8901 as its starting point for encouraging schools to make existing events more sustainable, socially, economically and environmentally.
As well as receiving prizes of up to £1,500 the winners of GetGreenGo™ will get the chance to visit Old Trafford and find out about the sustainability initiatives taking place there at the awards ceremony in September. Entries so far include a workshop where pupils made products from food packaging and a tea party with fair-trade food and drink.
Mike Low, Director of BSI British Standards, said, “This is a great opportunity for schools to demonstrate their commitment to environmental, social and economic issues and for young people to build on their understanding of sustainability in a fun way.”
