Fire detection

Alarms and detection

BSI Product Services has created a state of the art fire alarm and detection testing facility to help manufacturers and distributors increase their competitive advantage and meet the needs of buyers and international specifiers, by demonstrating compliance with the requirements of legislation.

BSI’s alarm and detection certification and testing services comprehensively covers the full range of applicable standards and European norms including services for CE marking and the prestigious product certification mark, the Kitemark®. In addition BSI can assist our customers with product research, development and quality management systems registration.

BS EN 54 Parts 2 & 4 are recognised globally as the standards to which fire alarm control panels and power supplies should conform. In line with the development and increased reach of the Construction Products Directive (CPD) 89/106/EEC the EN54 suite of standards is, part by part being harmonised for CE marking.

In addition to the CPD, BSI is a Notified Body for 17 EU Directives including the Low Voltage Directive 73/23/EC and the EMC Directive 89/336/EC, which are also applicable to fire alarm and detection products.

Currently the following parts of EN 54 contain an Annex Z, which identifies the essential requirements of the CPD to be satisfied for application of the CE mark, allowing free movement of products within the EEC and fall under the remit of the CPD:

  • BS EN 54: Part 3       Fire alarm devices - sounders
  • BS EN 54: Part 4       Power supply equipmen
  • BS EN 54: Part 5       Heat detectors Point detectors
  • BS EN 54: Part 7       Smoke detectors – point detectors using scattered light, transmitted light or ionisation
  • BS EN 54: Part 12     Smoke detectors – Line detectors using transmitted line beam.
  • BS EN 12094-1          Fire extinguishing panels

The following are under review and when published will contain an Annex Z for CE marking:

  • BS EN 54 Part 2        Fire alarm control panels
  • BS EN 54: Part 11     Manual call points

Design review

BSI can facilitate a review of product design documentation and/or prototype to determine possible non-compliance with the requirements of the standards. This service can be performed either at BSI Product Services or at client premises and offers R&D engineers the opportunity to establish the exact intention of the requirements and how they can be met.

Pre-assessment

Prototype, pre-production or current fire detection and alarm products can be tested and BSI will produce a detailed report outlining any actual or potential non-compliance. The pre-assessment also includes a brief review of technical documentation such as the user and installation manuals.

These additional services build partnerships between BSI and clients helping to remove the complexity from conformance.
