Summary of Kitemark® scheme requirements

Electrical installation work

This is a summary of the BSI Kitemark® Scheme for Electrical Installers, intended as a quick guide to consumers.

Local Authorities and other electrical work specifiers requiring details of the scheme should refer to the Local Authorities section of the website.

Under the Kitemark® Scheme, BSI assesses contracting companies competence to design, construct, inspect and test, and maintain electrical installation work and, where relevant, meet the requirements under Part P of the Building Regulations.

BSI issues a Licence granting the use of the Kitemark® in respect of electrical installation work conforming to the relevant British Standard(s), and where relevant, the Parts of the Building Regulations of England and Wales 2000.

The Licence lists the categories of work for which the contractor has passed assessment, and may be taken as proof of his registration to the BSI Scheme.

Where electrical installation work is subject under legislation to the submission of a Building Notice to a Local Authority, the Scheme will give entitlement to Licensees to self-certify compliance with the relevant Building Regulations.

All Kitemark® licensees will have undergone the following:

  • Assessment to ensure the technical competence of Qualified Supervisors
  • Examination of the public liability insurance held; and, where applicable, insurance backed guarantee cover offered to the customer by the contractor.
  • Assessment of the contractor’s quality management systems and processes.
  • On-site inspection of  samples of electrical installation work
  • Assessment of installation records
  • Ongoing surveillance

All Kitemark® licensees will:

  • Ensure that they are carrying out electrical installation work to all relevant Regulations and in a safe and competent manner.
  • Hold public liability insurance cover of not less than £2 million.
  • Issue a Building Regulations certificate for all work carried out which is subject to notification under the Building Regulations.
  • Offer the consumer an insurance backed warranty on the notifiable work, valid for 6 years.
  • Have a quality system covering how they handle staff competence, training and handling of complaints.
  • Have a written Health and Safety policy.

Complaints

  • Consumers may approach BSI if they have any complaints about the work carried out by one of our Licensees, but ONLY after they have pursued a complaint direct to the contractor and have still not received satisfaction.
