Masonry, Concrete and Cement Testing
BSI operates a wide range of Kitemark schemes covering concrete and masonry as well as offering a full CE marking service for cement based products, aggregates, admixtures, building limes and other similar products.
Our service includes a Kitemark scheme that covers cements conforming to EN 197-1. This also entitles the manufacturer to receive an EC Certificate of Conformity from BSI for the purposes of CE marking under the EU Construction Products Directive.
Kitemark schemes include:
- BS EN 206-1 and BS 8500 - Ready mixed concrete
- EN 197-1 Portland cement
- BS 146 Portland blastfurnace cement
- BS 4027 Sulfate-resisting Portland cement
- BS 5224 Masonry cement
- BS 6588 Portland pulverised-fuel ash cements
Ready-mixed concrete is certified by BSI for conformity to BS EN 206-1 and its UK complementary standard BS 8500 Parts 1 and 2. The assessment involves the examination of the supplier’s quality management system to BS EN ISO 9001, the acceptability of the supplier’s factory production control including the plant, personnel and equipment, and the technical and production processes.
BSI certifies each individual plant producing ready-mixed concrete.

Kitemark for Ready-Mix Mobile batching units
BSI has introduced a specific Kitemark scheme to BS EN 206-1 - specification for performance, production and conformity of concrete to take account of the introduction of Mobile Batching Units (Volumetric Batching Trucks).
J Clubb is the first company to achieve a Kitemark Licence for its Mobile Batching Units to this new scheme. J Clubb already has Kitemark licences for their two ready-mixed concrete plants at Gravesend and Dartford to BS EN 206-1.
Ready Mixed Concrete Testing
The BSI Kitemark provides independent verification that ready-mixed concrete meets the required standards. BSI is an accredited laboratory (in the UK, UKAS accreditation applies).
The Standards
Certification bodies across Europe have introduced compliance to the EN 206-1 concrete standard to their certification schemes for ready-mixed concrete. Within the UK this is published as BS EN 206-1 and invokes the application of its UK complimentary standard, BS 8500.
BS EN 206-1:2000 applies to concrete for structures cast in situ, precast structures, and structural precast products for buildings and civil engineering structures. The concrete may be mixed on site, supplied as ready-mixed concrete or produced in a plant for precast concrete products.

The assessment involves the examination of the supplier’s quality management system to BS EN ISO 9001, the acceptability of the suppliers factory production control including the plant, personnel and equipment, and the technical and production processes.
Masonry - Brick and Concrete Testing
Masonry is the cornerstone of the construction industry. The materials used, the quality of the mortar and workmanship, and the pattern the units are put in can strongly affect the durability of the overall construction.
BSI’s testing and certification offers a Kitemark scheme for the BS EN 771 series of standards for the characteristics and performance requirements of masonry units.
