How to achieve a Kitemark for Garage Services (PAS 80)
There are five main stages in the process of gaining the Kitemark for
Garage Services (PAS 80):
- Purchase PAS 80
- Application
- Audit
- Issuing of the Kitemark Licence
- On-going assessment
The PAS 80 document
You need to purchase a copy of the PAS 80 document by either telephoning us on 08450 765610, or by emailing us.
Once you have the PAS 80 document, you should carry out your own assessment against the PAS 80 requirements. This will highlight any areas of your business where you will need to make adjustments to your working practices.
Gap analysis
If, following this assessment, you're still uncertain as to whether you meet all of the PAS 80 requirements, BSI will be happy to carry out a one day gap analysis. The format of this day resembles an actual audit day. You will receive a report detailing where you need to make improvements, if any.

Application form
Once you're familiar with the requirements needed to achieve PAS 80 and are happy that you meet the standards, you must fill in an Application Form (PDF size 164Kb)
Pre-licence fee
Before any application can proceed we must receive the pre-licence fee. Details of the fees are available on request. We are happy to accept either a cheque or credit/debit card payment. Where you indicate a credit or debit card payment, we will call you to take the payment.
Assessment
When your application and pre-licence fee have been received, the assessor we have appointed for you will be in touch to arrange a suitable date for audit and to answer any other queries you might have.

Garage Assessment
To join the Kitemark scheme a garage has first to demonstrate conformity with the scheme requirements through an initial assessment. This assessment includes an audit of the garage’s quality control and service delivery.
A typical audit usually only takes one day. Our assessors are all experienced individuals from within the automotive industry, which helps the day run smoothly.
Non-compliances
In the event that any non-compliances are identified during the audit, you will need to address these by implementing a corrective action plan. Only major non-compliances will require another visit to your premises, or unduly hold up the licence issue. Digital photographs and written submissions can all be taken into account when assessing the corrective action plan and clearing minor non-compliances.

Kitemark License Issue
Once the audit is complete and any non-conformity cleared, the assessor’s report is sent to the Scheme Manager for review and a licence decision is made. Your licence, complete with its security hologram is then sent to you with your licence pack. Your licence pack will contain both your licence, a presentation copy of the licence for display, further relevant scheme information and details on how to use and reproduce the Kitemark symbol to advertise your accreditation.
Ongoing Assessment
Once you've achieved the Kitemark Licence for PAS 80, your commitment to quality and raising standards means that we will evaluate your business during the year.
The ongoing assessment can take the form of an unannounced visit to check that standards are being met on a day-to-day basis, mystery shopping where we will present a vehicle with introduced faults, and feedback from your customers.
This helps to ensure that all Kitemark licensees incorporate the requirements of PAS 80 into everyday business practices, thus maintaining customer service standards.
