PRESS RELEASE
30 April 2010
BSI Group has today announced continued growth during 2009 despite last year’s tough global economic conditions. Revenue grew 10.1%* to £222.8m, with profit up 8.2% to £22.5m.
Despite a worldwide recession, BSI’s clients have continued to invest in BSI’s solutions that will help them cut waste, improve their performance and deliver a return on their bottom line. Last year, LG – one of the world’s largest electronics companies – sought BSI’s expertise to help them cut their energy usage, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and tackle environmental damage at their operations in India. In doing so, LG India became the first company in Asia Pacific to be awarded energy management certification to BS EN 16001. Similarly, working with BSI, FirstGroup has cut energy consumption by 31% and increased waste recycling by 30% since 2000, in parts of its UK business.
In 2009, Vodafone UK worked with BSI to ensure continuity of supply to its customers for its 3G, voice and broadband services, no matter what the circumstances. As a result, it became the world’s first mobile operator to receive independent certification to the globally renowned British Standard for business continuity management, BS 25999, for all three services.
Meanwhile, for good governance, risk and compliance (GRC) management, many leading companies – including GSK, Levis Strauss & Co, Primark and global cereal and snack giant Kellogg – select BSI’s leading Entropy™ Software solution. And in the USA, the Department of Homeland Security is using another of BSI’s software solutions to monitor, and take action against, supply chain security risks and threats.
And where human wellbeing and patient safety are paramount, 23 of the world’s top 25 healthcare companies have chosen BSI for their medical device certification. This certification, known as CE marking, helps them gain market access into Europe.
With clients in more than 140 countries, BSI Group is a leading global independent business services company that provides practical solutions to help organizations of any size cut costs, manage risk and be more sustainable. BSI does this through the development of standards, the assessment and certification of management systems and medical devices, testing and certification of products and services, software solutions and training services. With market leading positions in the UK, USA and Japan and double digit growth in the BRIC economies, BSI is well placed for future expansion in Europe, Asia Pacific and the Americas.
In the UK, BSI is also well known for the Kitemark® which provides reassurance to customers for products and services, and is recognized by 82% of the UK adult population.
Howard Kerr, Chief Executive, BSI Group commented: “Our continued success over the last year is a clear demonstration of the value and trust that our clients place in our solutions. These solutions help to underpin their success which is why we are partner of choice all over the world. We have doubled the size of the business in the last five years and we aim to double again in the next five years. The acquisitions we made in Europe and USA last year form a key part of our acquisitional and organic growth strategy which will deliver our growth ambitions.”
Sir David John KCMG, Chairman, BSI Group said: “Since 1903 we have been developing standards-based solutions that help business and society. Our ethos remains the same, but today we are able to touch and benefit millions of lives. From helping businesses reduce their carbon footprint to cutting waste on production lines, from CE marking of cardio-vascular stents to the development of standards in nanotechnology, from ensuring continuity of supply chains to vehicle crash repair, we help businesses and consumers all over the world.”
