PRESS RELEASE
18 June 2007
BSI British Standards announces the appointment of a new chairman for its Biometrics Committee, IST/44. Dr Peter Waggett, who runs an emerging technology team at IBM, took up the position in May.
Dr Waggett brings extensive experience of innovative IT systems, including research into image processing at University College London and the Marconi Research Centre. His work in the field of biometrics at IBM included responsibility for the delivery of identity management systems for a range of government and commercial organisations. Dr Waggett is currently involved in biometrics research projects at the University of Surrey.
IST/44 has already delivered a number of key standards in the field of biometrics which along with future standards will underpin identity management programmes, including the planned UK identity card scheme.
Dr Waggett said, "I am delighted to have been asked to chair this high-profile BSI committee at such a key stage in its development. We have a well-mapped out strategy for the future which will lead to a new generation of biometric standards to improve innovation and competition in the important area of identity management, at home and overseas."
Mike Low, Director of BSI British Standards said, "Dr Waggett’s wide-ranging experience in the IT industry and biometrics in particular will form an important contribution to the work of this committee."
