Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil System (ISPO) is a policy from Indonesian Government – Ministry of Agriculture to increase palm oil competitiveness in the global market. In addition, the certification for sustainable palm oil production demonstrates Indonesian commitment to reduce greenhouse gases and putting special attention to environmental issues. ISPO established in 2009 to ensure all oil palm business meets all Indonesian applicable laws and requlations. Since 2011, ISPO certification becomes mandatory for all oil palm plantation in Indonesia and will be mandatory for all oil palm grower and smallholder by November 2025.

The latest ISPO certification was regulated through Peraturan Presiden No.44 Tahun 2020 tentang Sistem Sertifikasi Kelapa Sawit Berkelanjutan and Peraturan Menteri Pertanian No.38 Tahun 2020 tentang Penyelenggaraan Sertifikasi Kelapa Sawit Berkelanjutan Indonesia.

The objective of Peraturan Presiden No.44 Tahun 2020 tentang Sistem Sertifikasi Kelapa Sawit Berkelanjutan:

  • To ensure and improve oil palm plantation management and development in compliance with ISPO principle and criteria;
  • To improve Indonesian oil palm plantation product’s acceptance and competitiveness in national market and international market; and
  • To expedite Indonesian effort in greenhouse gases reduction.
