Why certify your products with BSI?

The British Standards Institution, an independent organization established more than 100 years ago and owner of the prestigious BSI Kitemark, has tremendous experience in the creation and implementation of all types of standards, both in the UK and globally; we currently operate in more than 100 countries. BSI is a UK Business Superbrand with the BSI Kitemark symbol being recognised by 82% of the UK Adult population.

Our history and the expertise of our people sets us apart from other testing and certification organizations. BSI has always been at the vanguard of the testing and certification industry, working with all types of organization to help them develop and deliver compliant products and to prove their product quality.

As a fully UKAS Accredited Certification Body, BSI can ensure that the benefits of certification meet your expectations through testing and certification to British, European, or international standards, as well as a manufacturer’s own specification. We hold Notified Body Status for seventeen European Directives and we are familiar with the market access requirements of virtually every country in the world.

BSI is the only organization that can grant a licence for the world-famous BSI Kitemark, which has been a symbol of trust and integrity since 1903.

Our team of more than 270 people delivers world class expertise, improving products, services and trading relationships globally. We help thousands of organizations to open new markets, maximize the potential of existing markets and manage risk, thereby making them more successful and allowing them to make a real difference to their business and their customers.

Our core philosophy is teamwork: we work with our clients to help them reach their objectives by providing technical judgements and physical testing of products, components and processes, at all stages of the production cycle. We also develop quality schemes for services and issue certification that covers such areas as quality, fairness and customer service.

One of the key strengths of BSI is our independence. We are not owned by government, industry or shareholders, which means that we can be totally objective in our testing and certification. This gives our assessments more authority than those of an organization that has a vested interest in promoting its members.

Impartiality is also important for voluntary schemes such as the Kitemark, where purchasers can see the manufacturers’ or service providers’ commitment to delivering safety and quality, every time.

Notified Body Status

The primary role of a Notified Body is to provide services for conformity assessment on the conditions set out in the New Approach Directives in support of CE marking. This normally means assessing the manufacturers conformity to the essential requirements listed in each directive.

Conformity assessment can be inspection, quality assurance, unit verification, type examination or design examination, or a combination of these. Notification is the process where the Member State informs the Commission that a body meets the designated requirements, such as knowledge, experience, independence, resources, to conduct the conformity assessments. The Commission then publishes the names of the Notified Bodies in the Official Journal.

UKAS Accreditation

BSI carries a host of UKAS (United Kindom Accreditation Service) accreditation for its current portfolio of services.

UKAS assesses laboratories against the requirements of the international standard ISO/IEC 17025, which replaces the previous standards ISO Guide 25 and EN 45001.

A laboratory seeking UKAS accreditation has to satisfy UKAS Assessment Managers and independent assessors that it is technically competent and operates a quality system to rigorous international standards.

Following successful assessment, UKAS will issue a schedule of accreditation to the laboratory, which will specify those calibrations or tests the laboratory has been accredited for, and for which it should issue certificates or reports bearing the UKAS testing or calibration mark.

It is in the interest of customers to specify clearly in their orders that a UKAS testing or calibration Report or Certificate is required for the work done by the UKAS accredited laboratories they are using.
