Getting started with the BSI Kitemark™ for Vehicle Damage Repair

What is the BSI Kitemark™ for Vehicle Damage Repair?

Based on the recognized industry standard which identifies the key methods, people and processes to follow when carrying out vehicle repairs, the BSI Kitemark for Vehicle Damage Repair is a truly independent certification scheme, certified by UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service).

Whether you're are an independent body shop, part of a body shop or accident repair group, or a mobile repairer, you can achieve a BSI Kitemark by being independently inspected and achieving BSI Kitemark status.

The BSI Kitemark is important for fleet managers and accident management companies too. Whether you outsource your service, maintenance and repairs or manage your own workshops, making sure that your repairs are BSI Kitemark approved can help you demonstrate your duty of care.

This means proving that:

  • Correct repair processes are followed
  • Staff are competent and trained
  • Tools and equipment are suitable and maintained
  • Parts are appropriate for safe repair
  • Quality control procedures are followed

The BSI Kitemark scheme is adopted industry-wide by the most forward thinking body shops and accident repair centres who are committed to carrying out work only to the highest standards. Plus it’s recognized by automotive manufacturers and most major insurance companies.

Who can apply for the scheme

Any car repair business – large or small, independent or franchise, operating from fixed premises or mobile facilities can apply for a BSI Kitemark licence.

What the scheme includes

A BSI Kitemark for Vehicle Damage Repair licence can be awarded in any of the three repair types:

  • Category 1 – The repair of dents, paint scratches and gouges or trim such that the damaged area can be returned to its pre-damaged condition without the need for replacement parts. This category excludes road wheels.
  • Category 2 - The repair of dents, paint scratches and gouges or trim such that the damaged area can be returned to its pre-damaged condition including the removal, re-fitting or replacement of "auto glazing units and bolt on" parts, examples of which includes but is not restricted to: bonnets, doors, road wheels, wings, tailgates, bumpers, bumper reinforcing bar. Excludes replacement of chassis, steering and suspension parts.
  • Category 3 - The repair of dents, paint scratches and gouges or trim such that the damaged area can be returned to its pre-damaged condition including the removal, re-fitting or replacement of "auto glazing units and bolt on" parts, examples of which includes but is not restricted to: bonnets, doors, road wheels, wings, tailgates, bumpers, bumper reinforcing bar and additionally: replacement and repair of panels; repair and replacement of structural parts including chassis members and "bolt on" chassis related parts; and body shell and chassis replacements.

Are you a small business?

The BSI Kitemark scheme doesn’t just cater for large body shops or group networks. If your repair business has a total of seven staff (inclusive of direct and non direct), our small body shop scheme has been designed for you. This means a reduction in the number of audits you will receive and therefore a reduced cost.

The scheme does not cover repair processes for public service vehicles, heavy commercial vehicles or heavy goods vehicles or other non-passenger vehicles such as fork lift trucks and windscreen repairers, although the replacement of windscreens and other automotive glazing and mechanical parts/components is covered when part of the repair process; and M.O.T. Testing.
