Brian Newell

Nominated by: Mr David Talbot, Technical Consultant, Craven Dunnill & Co Ltd, B/539

Referees: David Wilson, B/539; Ian Knifton, B/539

Brian has been a member of B/539 – Ceramic tiles and other rigid tiling, since the early 1980s and contributed his drafting expertise to the first suite of Tile Installation Standards BS 5385 Parts 1-5, as well as the first Workmanship on Site Standard BS 8000. Brian represented BSI on TC67 WG4 as a Principal Expert for the drafting of the first European Technical Report CEN/TR13548, 'General rules for the design and installation of ceramic tiling' which was adopted by many European countries as the basis for their own National Standards. For 25 years, Brian has represented BSI as UK Expert and then as Delegation Leader to CEN TC67 Plenary Committee, drafting harmonized European standards for ceramics and ceramic tile adhesives. He has represented BSI as UK Delegate to the ISO TC189 Plenary Committee for many years. In 2010, Brian was appointed by ISO TC189 as Project Leader tasked with evaluating new test methods that he had advised were necessary for hard and soft body impact resistance testing of mechanically fixed large format ceramic tiles used for external building facades. This work was completed this year. In 2012 Brian proposed that there should be ISO installation guidelines for ceramic wall and floor tiling. ISO TC189 agreed to this if he would be prepared to accept the role of Convenor of the Working Group that drafted the guidelines. Brian is the first UK Delegate representing BSI to be appointed as Convenor of an ISO TC189 Working Group, and the resulting publication of TR17870 will be the first ceramic tile installation guidelines to be published by ISO.
