The new ISO 14001:2015 standard is based on Annex SL – the new high level structure (HLS) that brings a common framework to all management system standards. This helps to keep consistency, align different management system standards, offer matching sub-clauses against the top-level structure and apply common language across all standards.

The key changes in the standard are:

  • The emphasis on leadership
  • The focus on risk management
  • Emphasis on objectives measurement and change
  • Communication and awareness
  • Fewer prescriptive requirements
  • Increased focus on lifecycle perspective

Now the new standard has been published, organizations will find it easier to incorporate their environmental  management system into the core business processes and gain greater business benefits.

I’m interested in certifying to ISO 14001. What should I do?

ISO 14001:2004 is still valid and companies will still benefit from implementing and certifying against it. Certification to ISO 14001:2004 will be allowed for a period of time following the publication of the new version of the standard expected 2015, which will be determined by the Joint Accreditation System of Australia & New Zealand (JAS-ANZ), expected to be a couple of years.
