UKCA marking and training

The UK Government has confirmed that the UKCA mark will come into force on 1 Jan 2021, although CE marking will continue to be recognized in the UK until the end of 2022, as long as the UK and EU regulations remain aligned. However, from the beginning of 2023 only products with UKCA marking will be accepted in Great Britain.

The UKCA mark came into force on 1 January 2021. However, for most products, CE marking recognition in Great Britain has been extended indefinitely.

There are some exceptions, which include medical devices, construction products and marine equipment. Please see here for full details.

Most products that are currently covered under regulations and directives for CE marking fall under the scope of UKCA marking. BSI is an Approved Body (0086) for the UKCA mark and we can work with you on the required conformity assessment procedures that will allow you to affix the UKCA mark for a large number of product areas.

The steps you need to take to prepare for UKCA marking will depend on the status of your business and your future market access requirements.

It is the importers’ responsibility to meet both the relevant regulations and place UKCA marking on the product. 

For some products, you will be able to access the European Union and the United Kingdom market by applying CE marking to your products. Please note this doesn’t apply to all products - please check the official UKCA Government webpage for details. It is possible to achieve and place both marks (UKCA & CE) on a single product shall you decide to apply both markings. However, you can access both markets by applying for the CE marking for most products. 

To maintain your CE mark you will need to work with a notified body registered in an EU27 member state. Your CE mark will be recognized in the EU and also the UK.

BSI offers both UKCA Marking (from the UK) and CE marking (from the Netherlands).

UKCA Certification may be required for certain classifications of medical devices and is available from the UK appointed Approved Bodies, such as BSI (0086).
